How it all began …
My journey to become a counsellor one day, began way back in 1997, when I first joined a school as a Maths teacher. During my teaching tenure, I got the opportunity to understand the children of all age groups very closely. As a class teacher, I could observe the changes taking place in their behaviours very closely. A child who exhibited a behaviour which deviated from normal ( according to my understanding….) e.g. suddenly becoming withdrawn, aggressive, losing interest in studies, getting distracted, scoring poor grades, etc. always caught my attention and I would use my hunches and try to help the child. That involved talking to his/her parents too. At that time I didn’t know that I was actually counselling them but saw that I was able to bring about a positive change in both the child and his /her parents. I realised, my counselling not only helped the children socially, emotionally etc. but their academic performance improved drastically. Many a times, students would approach me with queries regarding stream selection and take advice on choosing their career. I found that I had the skill to be able to gauge their interest and aptitude and help them with career choices based on their academic performance.
Over the years, my conviction got stronger and I felt passionate about pursing Counselling professionally. I knew it would mean completely changing my career path, but I was confident that I possessed the requisite qualities and vision needed. To realize my dream career, I went ahead and acquired qualification in Guidance and Counselling and equipped myself with relevant tools to counsel effectively.
Becoming a counsellor, was a long journey which became a turning point in my life.
